Notes
people with ambition think they should be a go-getter
but the real secret is giving
people expect a bank to pay interest before they're willing to deposit
you have to create value first, then you'll be rewarded
most people think of the world as a place of limitation
but it's really a place of infinite possibility
it's about co-creation, not competition
you often won't get what you want in life
but you do get what you expect (law of attraction)
you get what you focus on
if you see the world as dog-eat-dog, that's what you get
instead, try to go looking for the best in people
the world treats you more or less the way you expect to be treated
appearances can be deceiving
the most successful people usually don't flaunt their wealth
everyone likes to be appreciated
people do business with and refer others to those they know, like, and trust
a bad restaurant tries to give just enough food and service for the price
a good restaurant tries to give the most quantity and quality for the price
a great restaurant gives a better experience than any money could pay for
THE LAW OF VALUE
your true worth is determined by:
how much more you give in value
than what you take in payment
the first question should not be, can i make money?
it should be, how can i server or add value to others?
then after you've figured that out, you can think about money
THE LAW OF COMPENSATION
your income is determined by:
how many people you serve
and how well you serve them
your compensation is directly proportional to how many lives you touch
it's not just a question of value, it's a question of impact
that's why teachers don't get paid much
they provide lots of value, but they only reach a few kids at a time
whereas an educational company can help millions of kids
you have control over all these aspects
you can choose to create value first before you make money
and you can choose to serve more people by building systems
there are no limitations on what you can earn
because you can always find more people to serve
some people have a fear of success when they see how big it could get
they think that people who get rich can't always be people who do good
the myth is that people get rich by taking advantage of others
the good people like teachers, volunteers, and police never get paid much
but you need to change your belief system
you can get rich because you are doing good for so many people
being broke and being rich are both decisions
if you believe that you need to be broke to do good, you will be broke
you can also believe that you will be rich by creating value in the world
a go-getter assumes that getting a lot done means high stress
but the most successful people are relaxed and playful
approach each task as though you love it
there are 3 main reasons for working:
1) survive - meet your basic living needs
2) save - go beyond basic needs and expand your life
3) serve - make a contribution to the world around you
build a strong network
a network is not just your customers or clients
it's people who know you, like you, and trust you
they are personally invested in seeing you succeed
they're your army of personal walking ambassadors
to create this kind of network, stop keeping score
don't keep track of who's ahead
always look for a win-win solution where both people come out ahead
don't remember that someone owes you a favor
that's not being a friend, that's being a creditor
forget about 50-50, focus on the other person's win
THE LAW OF INFLUENCE
your influence is determined by:
how abundantly you place other people's interests first
most people think influence is caused by money, position, and power
but in fact, your influence results in those other things
you create influence by helping others first and creating goodwill
then it comes back to you and indirectly flows success back to you
givers attract positive feelings from others
they have a magnetic personality
apply these lessons in all areas of life, including marriage
care more about your spouse's happiness than your own
add value to whatever you sell
if you need a lot of money, add a lot of value
if you need a lot of money fast, add a lot of value fast
this story by Debra Davenport is really good, i can imagine it clearly
she had her husband walk out on her
she tried for a year to sell real estate and sold nothing
she learned all the closing techniques, but they didn't work
finally, she realized that the thing she knew was how to be a friend
not how to be a high pressure salesperson or corporate type
she thought she had no way to add value in her profession
but the one thing that she did was to add herself
that was exactly what was missing, her unique personality and charm
she did a totally unprofessional sales presentation, but she had charisma
and that led to her first sale
no matter what your training or skills, you are your own most valuable asset
reaching any goal requires 10% knowledge or technical skills
the other 90% is people skills
the core of it is who you are, not listening or talking to people
don't try to be someone else, understand yourself in detail
it's called authenticity
THE LAW OF AUTHENTICITY
the most valuable gift you have to offer is yourself
when you're young, you're taught that it's better to give than to receive
but in fact, you can't give and not receive, they go together
when someone tries to give you a gift, you must receive it
otherwise you are denying their right to give
receiving is the natural result of giving, you can't give and not receive
every giving can happen only because it is also a receiving
you must be willing and able to receive as much as you give
otherwise you shut down the flow of others trying to give to you
think of children, they are curious, playful, and have big dreams
you have to be open to receive, to learn how to be receptive
the secret to success, to gaining and having, is giving
and the secret to giving is making yourself open to receiving
THE LAW OF RECEPTIVITY
the key to effective giving is to stay open to receiving
you can't measure your success by what you do or what you accomplish
success is based on who you are and who you've become
overall, a good book
it has an interesting parable, but it breaks it up nicely with business lessons
i like the style, combining fiction with nonfiction in a clean way
it's better than many other stories that ramble on for too long with fiction
