Notes

1 million people start a small business each year in the U.S.
40% fail in the first year, 80% in 5 years, and 96% by 10 years

small businesses are started by technicians who have a skill
you must learn to manage finances and cash flow
lead your employees and take care of your customers

we become the average of the five people we most associate with
keep a notebook of the wisdom you read, hear, and learn

the biggest change comes from the people you meet and the books you read
you can get everything you want if you help other people get what they want

everyone loves to buy, but they hate to be sold
everyone sells their ideas every time they open their mouth
success occurs when opportunity and preparation meet

we grow strongest in the crucible of adversity
periodic rejection and failure is a key part of the success process
focus on confidence, professionalism, and belief in what you're selling

for every yes you get, you will have to endure 8 to 10 nos
know your numbers and your conversion rates
if you can measure it, you can manage it

in the beginning, you'll make much less than your employee friends
but eventually as you master the basics, you'll make way more

visualize your success before a big challenge, just like athletes do
when starting a business, play to your passion, not just the money
the test of purpose is to find people who will pay for your passion
don't quit your day job until you have some success in your own business

becoming a successful entrepreneur and having a spouse are not exclusive
character and values are more important than personality and looks
make sure you commit to spending time together as a team

1) your sales have to exceed expenses - don't overspend on an office
2) collect your bills - be reasonable but manage your accounts
3) take care of your customers - remember that you work for them
4) take care of your people - employees are your biggest asset

watch your ego, be competent but humble
approach each new challenge with the same passion and enthusiasm

the test of creativity is to plus your passion, create new revenue streams
cutting costs is negative energy, increasing income can be positive energy

the test of perpetual prosperity is to donate to charity and mentor others
