Notes
good first book by James Swain
i really like his later series with Tony Valentine
those are more like casino or gambling thrillers
this one is about magic and Harry Houdini
that's an interesting angle already
using magic as part of a thrilling escape is a great idea too
there are a few writing technique problems
which is somewhat expected in a first novel
the pacing is also slower than his later books
but overall, the idea is good
the total length is short, 260 pages
i like that length for a first novel
introduces the author without overwhelming the reader
the story isn't that complicated
it's mostly about a single rescue
some of the magic tricks are pretty cool
though i feel like the final trick could have been bigger
overall, a good first novel by an author who gets better |
