Notes
the first romantic thriller i've read, interesting to compare the style
the prologue and early chapters seemed long for my taste
there were sections within the chapters
but the viewpoint would change with a new section
i'd rather see each section as its own chapter with a clear viewpoint
it was hard to tell whose viewpoint was being shown sometimes
there are a lot of major characters, more than i would like
the romance is interesting, lots of personal drama and past history
but i think i prefer more straight action-oriented thriller with faster pace
the character development and dialogue slow down the actual plot
the plot did pick up by the end to more action, but that was a smaller percentage
one of the most difficult things about writing romance seems to be the opposite sex
being able to accurately portray the thoughts and words of both sexes
in this case, i felt like the author didn't capture the guy's thoughts all the time
since the author is a woman, she had interesting insight on the female perspective
but especially in the beginning, the men were a little too conservative
especially being Navy SEALs, they should have been more crude
an example is swearing, which they didn't do much of at first
though later in the story, there is more swearing and it seems to get more accurate
the mix of scenes at the serial killer's house provides some suspense
but it takes too long in my opinion to merge the stories and get into the action
the Asian American perspective is actually very well done for a Caucasian writer
the relationship drama is well done, which is what a romance writer would be good at
though the denouement and the wrap-up of relationships isn't that great to me
overall, it's interesting to see the style of a romantic thriller
i would prefer a faster pace with more action
but i like showing a more limited exploration of romance and character development |
