pretty straightforward book
gives the introduction to basics
covers both cardroom and online poker
written in 2003, so it's not totally up-to-date anymore
but it's a useful guide
the five decision factors in poker:
1) your cards - play strong starting hands
2) your position - try draws on the button
3) the number of players - draw against lots of players
4) pot odds - only play hands with positive expectation for the odds
5) opponents' playing styles - loose or tight, passive or aggressive
loose-passive game:
more bad beats, lots of people in hands, don't be overaggressive
fold frequently, don't bluff, there will be lots of showdowns
loose-aggressive game:
watch the pot odds, you'll have to pay for your draws
large swings in bankroll, hard to guess what opponents have
don't get caught in pre-flop raising wars with mediocre pocket cards
tight-passive game:
opponents generally have good cards, not much bluffing
position is really important, you'll get a lot of information
no action on your best hands, tight players will fold
pots are small, so blinds can reduce your chip stack
don't get too tight yourself in this case, bet a decent hand
make your little wins add up through careful aggression
tight-aggressive game:
players have good cards, but they mix it up
they will protect their hands and make you pay to draw
high pairs will stand up more often
one error can make a big difference in your stack
don't be too passive, don't fold because you're intimidated
if you hit top pair but there's a flush draw, it's less likely they are drawing
you won't make much on monster hands, so win the marginal hands where you're ahead
constantly adjust your play to the conditions of the game
it may change from loose-passive to tight-aggressive, adjust your strategy with it |
