Notes
this book was quoted by many other authors, but the style is a bit artsy for me
remember that the methods that made the first novel may not work on the second
trust in love and it will take you where you need to go
and trust in what you love, continue to do it, and the same will happen
security at the deepest level comes from doing what you love
learning to write is not a linear process, there are many truths
your thoughts are always faster than your hands
try writing by hand to get more emotion through your method
the basic unit of writing practice is the timed exercise - set a timer and go
when you're on, you're more intensely involved and your body hangs loose
it takes a while for our experience to sift through our consciousness
trust in the process, keep on writing even when it's all endless crap
if you aren't afraid of the voices inside you, you won't fear the critics outside you
make a list of writing topics whenever you think of an idea
when you don't feel like writing, sit down and write that statement
give voice to the resistance in your head, let it argue with you on paper
write what's in front of you, even if you're only there for a short time
our writing only represents us at the time we wrote it, every minute we change
our lives are at once both ordinary and mythical, we see magic in the ordinary
use specific names of streets and places to enhance the detail of the scene
a bomb can kill many people at once and turn them into numbers and stats
but we can oppose the bomb by giving detail and significance to each person
your ingredients are the details of your life, but you can't just list them out
you have to add the heat and energy of your heart and your interpretation
writing is 90% listening, you listen deeply and the words pour out of you
3 things to become a good writer: read a lot, listen well and deeply, write a lot
don't think too much, be receptive and keep the words moving across the page
watch out for the word "about", don't say what it's about, just write it and it'll show
don't tell someone a story, make them experience and live it
make clear, strong statements, without modifiers like "maybe" or "isn't it?"
if you write a question, take a stand and answer it, it will help you find yourself
Paris has lots of cafes, and writing is accepted there unlike here
creativity is a loss of control, don't try to order and organize it, let it be messy
writing is an act of discovery, discover your relationship with a topic
writers often write about things that other people don't pay much attention to
push yourself beyond when you think you're done with what you have to say
sometimes it's just because you're scared that you stop, try to go further with it
if you're in the moment, ride the wave for as long as possible, keep pushing
don't just put in your time to numbly write, engage the writing deeply
if you're stuck, try dressing differently to see the world from a new angle
try a writing marathon, write multiple sessions for an extended period of time
art can make the ordinary extraordinary by awakening us to life
cut ruthlessly, but don't edit word by word, see revision as "envisioning again"
you want to become reengaged in the moment of writing, not just thinking
success can be lonely, isolating, and disappointing
don't expect it to make you feel complete, move on and continue |
