Notes

beginning a piece of writing requires blind faith that you will find the words
overcome the fear of "losing your story" by returning to the first kernel of an idea
get ideas from "what if" and "sometimes" and don't censor anything at first
write through all the seasons, not just when something important comes along
if you're stuck, be still and experience the stuckness, notice and observe it
write in detail about a normal object or event
then look for the deeper meaning or metaphor
read your work aloud and make notes on which parts are smooth or awkward
use the "yes, and" game to extend ideas into full stories
to get unstuck, try typing with the monitor off so you can't see the words
ask readers to quickly say the images, details and facts that they remember
boring people complain and talk about trivial things
interesting stories cover emotions and varying topics, feelings and attitudes
when you find a cliche, write about a specific character doing specific things
look for places where you backed away due to fear
or where you held back from truth, pain, honesty, emotion
Sheila mentions Shawn Wong from an event she attended
less than 10% of people try to negotiate their salary when given the opportunity
overall this book is okay, though the letters have a lot of extra stuff I don't need
but there are some useful ideas within
