Notes
a Code of Honor is your values put into practice through behavior
90% of new businesses fail within the first 5 years
90% of those remaining fail before the 10th year
four main skills: sales, accounting, investing and leadership
build businesses and create jobs rather than needing a job
about 50% of the gross domestic product is from small businesses
about half of small businesses are sole proprietorships or home-based
mission first, then needs of the team, then individual needs
most of the time, it's the other way around - what's in it for me?
qualities of a great team player:
1) high energy, motivated, engaging, optimistic
2) desire to win, willing to put in the time and energy to win
3) willingness to let others win, able to compromise for the team
4) personally responsible, doesn't blame others
5) fits the team's mission and code
6) unique talent or ability that complements the team
in the absence of a team code, everyone plays by their own rules
this causes conflict because each person is right according to their rules
the key to success with a team is playing to each person's strengths
to ensure optimal team communication:
1) maintain interest in the team mission and the other team members
2) talk to others in their terms first, think from their point of view
3) be clear and be brief, get to the point
4) verify what others said by repeating it and verify they understood you
results come from behavior, attitude and conditioning so focus on those
the code is not a list of values, it's specific rules you can follow
you must call it when a rule is breached, no punishment, just point it out
surround yourself with people who ask more of you than you do
greatness is born out of adversity
growths come from pressure, leading to greater ability to handle more |
