This song started out as a guitar riff; it was written around a time when most of my songs were more electronic so it was kind of like a return to my roots in guitar (see the album To Another Day). This song was also inspired by some of my working friends, when I was still living the "college life" as a grad student and thinking about whether it was better to have money or time...
Deep Blue Sky
Date: 01/01/1999
Times came when my life was changing
I ran to my hideaway and
You traded youth for the money, baby
Got more than you planned
As a child I could live forever
Invincible life
Naivety gone with big wheels
You stood by my side
And I pretend that I could fly
On this pillow cloud I lie
Through the deep blue sky
Soaring high and all around
Looking down upon the ground
The world is mine
You give me everything
You give me life
It's just another tiny world we live in
That keeps us around
And all of the hope you've given
So deep in my soul
To dwell on the past or future
Time washes away
I'm older and wiser maybe
I'll live for today
I'll live for the way
That I feel when
Your heart is near me
And I forget myself
The way to the place
That I know can save me
I'll close my eyes
And find my way
And I pretend that I could fly
On this pillow cloud I lie
Through the deep blue sky
Soaring high and all around
Looking down upon the ground
The world is mine
You give me everything
You give me life
